Competition Piece
I have been working on a new drawing which can be used in the comic but also for illustration competitions when I am finished. So far I have finished the line work in two separate drawings. First I drew out the basic idea of behind behind the character as he comes around a corner pulling reeds and leaves out of his way to unveil a large landscape. I knew I wanted to draw a city in the background but also knew that if i tried to draw it in detail at the small scale I desired i would wind up destroying the rest of the drawing through smudging or erasing or simply getting frustrated and making a stupid mistake. So, I decided to draw the castle separately and then scan them into Photoshop and scale the castle down to the appropriate size. This way I was able to keep the existing drawing from being overworked and get the detail in the small scale I desired.

While I was completing the tedious line work of the castle which I’m sure will be overlooked by most ( but I felt the need to do anyway) , I was planning out my color schemes. When I go to a finish and try to create my palate as I go along the end result is muddy, unorganized, and unsophisticated. I have been looking at a lot of artist’s who are very good with color and studying their usage and technique. So before I started the final coloring I did a few color tests as to what kind of palate I wanted to use. Right now I am still playing with color tests but I feel like I am very close to my final decisions and will be executing the final coloring and detailing soon.
Hey Mellis, I like that palette. The purple figure coming up out of the raspberry foreground is working with all the green & yellow. I think it could use a little muting and/or lightening somewhere. Maybe the upper sky & tree canopy?
Have you seen this yet? It’s a works-in-progress blog that turns various people’s comic page scans into animated gifs, so you can watch their decision-making process:
